The DE has a total of Soccer jerseys 41.5 career sacks, 14 forced fumbles and 231 tackles (165 solo) in five seasons. He's played in 72 games. Last season in 16 regular-season games, he made 52 stops (40 solo), 13.0 sacks and five forced fumbles. The DE has a reputation for being an explosive pass-rusher with power and speed. He's considered to be one of the best at putting pressure on quarterbacks.
DE Mathias Kiwanuka looks to be the replacement. Originally an outside linebacker, last season he was successfully converted to the defensive end position. In 10 games last season, he had 4.5 sacks and 46 tackles (34 solo). He missed the last six games of the season with a fractured fibula. He's a fine athlete with some good power and quickness but he's not as strong or as skilled as Umenyiora. Entering his third year in the NFL, Kiwanuka played a full season in 2006. There are some concerns regarding durability.
Tuesday, August 26, 2008 -- It's one of those things that fans, coaches and players all dread—a player moving against the grain, going to make a move and turning his body, his foot seems to stay planted in the turf and "snap." That's was happened to Giants Pro Bowl DE Osi Umenyiora in the the second quarter of a preseason match-up against the New York Jets.
Umenyiora was trying to get around Jets tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson when e was hurt.
Although as Umenyiora went off the field the injury may not have been too serious, it was. The DE tore his lateral meniscus, sending him into surgery, ending his 2008 football season before it ever began and dimming the hope that the New York Giants would get to the Super Bowl again. Umenyiora went through surgery on Tuesday and doctors were optimistic about the outcome.
