Several Packers receivers to rotate at productive slot position
In the West Coast offense, the slot receiver position is exalted, reserved only for wide receivers with the finest route-running ability, keenest hand-eye coordination and unquestioned courage.
Since Mike Holmgren brought the offense to the Green Bay Packers in 1992, the list of nfl jerseys receivers who have claimed the territory can be counted on one hand:
Sterling Sharpe. Robert Brooks. Antonio Freeman. Donald Driver.

It also is a dangerous position. Coaches like to have big, physical receivers like Sharpe and Freeman there because it often requires running up the middle of the field where the safeties are likely to converge as the ball is thrown.
Driver has done a remarkable job in the slot, but the time has come to spread things around.
"The ability to put guys in some different spots without making it a whole, new offense might give you an advantage," offensive coordinator Joe Philbin said. "They (the defense) might have a check (audible) where if '80' is in the slot we're going to play this, if it's '88' we're going to play that.
"The hope is that you can catch them in the right situation based on how you line up."
Perhaps the most eager individual to play the slot is Finley, who estimated that of the times he lined up as a receiver last year, only 25% of the time it was in the slot. If a defense is expecting Driver in the slot and out comes the 6-foot-5, 247-pound Finley, it has to decide how it wants to cover him.
The easiest thing would be to put the cornerbacks on Driver and Jennings and a safety on Finley. That's a match-up the Packers would take any day of the week.
"You're not out there with those quick corners," Finley said. "That's what I want. That's where you get the balls at, the slot. A-Rod loves that."
The maturity of the 208-pound Jones and 217-pound Nelson has a lot to do with the expansion of slot personnel. In practice and the first exhibition game, Nelson, in particular, has shown an ability to play big while in the slot.
His long arms allow him to reach passes others can't, and his downfield speed makes the safeties respect him. Jones has a big, powerful body and strong hands, which he can use in close quarters.
Nelson showed in the intrasquad scrimmage two weeks ago that he can split the safeties, catch the ball in traffic and take a hit. During the exhibition opener, he received a number of snaps in the slot with Driver on the outside.
"Jordy has nice size for attacking the middle for a wide receiver," Philbin said. "He's a big target, and he runs really good routes. I think the quarterback has confidence he'll be in the right spot, so he can throw the ball with a little anticipation.
"We're pleased with both those guys. We like their development."
Driver has not taken the diversification personally. The one disadvantage he has faced is that when the Packers come out in a three-receiver set, everyone knows where he'll be. That makes it easier to double cover him.
If he's suddenly outside and Jennings is the inside guy, Driver might not get the same attention. Or Jennings could wind up being the guy with the one-on-one.
"We want to get out of Patriots jersey that stationary position," Jennings said. "It's like once we . . . break the huddle, they know I'm going left, Donald's going right. So, we want to be able to just go. There definitely will be a lot more flexibility.

Coming off a Pro Bowl season in which he threw 30 touchdown passes and just seven interceptions and was the league's most efficient quarterback by far on third downs, sure, we're not talking about some huge leap that needs to be made.
Actually, Rodgers would prefer you don't talk about it.
Up to this point, he has answered nfl throwback jerseys questions like, "Where are you trying to improve?" with a curt, "I'd rather keep that to myself." Might as well ask about his personal life. You'll get the same answer.

One of Rodgers' most obvious attributes has been his aversion to throwing into traffic. In his first two years as a starter, Rodgers has seemed obsessed with avoiding interceptions, perhaps from watching predecessor Brett Favre throw it all over the lot.
"If he saw a defender around, you weren't getting the ball," tight end Jermichael Finley said. "That's the way it was."
But it hasn't been like that in this camp. Rodgers almost seems to be forcing himself to fit balls into the tightest of windows. Forget one defender in the area. There have been times when two or three have been converging and he's taken a quick rock step and thrown with gusto. And a good majority of the time he's connected.
"A lot of times I use those practice reps to try to fit balls in places where I normally would maybe stay away from," Rodgers said. "I don't think it's often a conscious effort, but I always challenge myself to be great with my eyes, to look people off almost every throw in practice, to throw the ball that normally I might think twice about or might restrain from if it's a tough window like that in the game in a tight situation."
Think John Elway, Dan Marino and, yes, Favre. You know the throw. They often come when the team needs a play to be made. But they can also go bust. High risk, high reward.
"A-Rod is starting to be a risk taker," Finley said, "I'll put it like that."
These are the kinds of throws that coach Mike McCarthy likes to call "winning throws."
"Your prime-time players win big games because they make those one or two plays," McCarthy said last season.
Rodgers started to make them in the crucial win over the Dallas Cowboys last season, and he continued to make them down the stretch. Now he's training himself to do it for an entire season.
This is the time to experiment. Legendary coach Sid Gilman used to implore his quarterbacks to take risks before the Chiefs jersey season. Not only to test the outer reaches of their own abilities, but also to understand what the receivers could do.
"I think with the way my arm is feeling and my body is feeling and the kind of guys we've got, I have the ability to make throws in tight windows trusting that if you put it in a tight spot to Jermichael and Jordy (Nelson) and James (Jones) and Greg (Jennings) and Donald (Driver), a majority of the time they're going to come up with it," Rodgers said.
The Packers don't want Rodgers to just throw the ball up for grabs. But they would like to see him strike a nice balance between going the safe route and gambling a little bit more. In the NFL, and with the defenses the Packers will face this season, Rodgers isn't going to get a "clean picture" - an area devoid of danger - for every pass.
"What I told him is you want to be disciplined in what you're doing, but you want to be opportunistic," quarterbacks coach Tom Clements said. "So if there's a chance for a big play, be aggressive, be opportunistic but make sure the odds are in our favor. Otherwise, just go through your progression, take what's open and wait until you have the chance to make a play."
It's also evident Rodgers intends to make a play sooner. He held the ball too long on occasion during the first week of camp, but that's a distant memory. Getting rid of it sooner and staying more in the rhythm of his teammates is certain to help cut down on the league-leading 50 sacks the Packers gave up last season.
But for Rodgers, it's always going to come down to what he does with his right arm. And A-Rod 3.0 is almost ready to launch.

That Derrick Ward signing hasn't worked out very well for Tampa
Not exactly breaking news, I'm aware. It seems worth revisiting, though, since Derrick Ward(notes), who signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers a year ago for $17 million over four years, has slipped to third on the depth chart. Oh, and now, via Ira Kaufman at TBO.com, his coach is saying he's out of nfl jerseys shape.
It's sweet that his coach remains confident, but we're in the third week of the preseason. If a player's not in shape at this point, he's tiptoeing a little too close to Albert Haynesworth(notes) territory.
Ward, for his part, says that his physical conditioning isn't an issue.
Fair enough. But if his conditioning isn't the Cincinnati Bengals jersey problem, what is? Because a problem clearly exists.

Derek Anderson to start for Cardinals at Chicago
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Matt Leinart(notes) has been benched after just two preseason games, this after the Arizona Cardinals gave him the starting job following Kurt Warner’s(notes) retirement.

In the UK the ICO has said it is reviewing the audit but that for the time being it had no plans to pursue the matter.
